LITERACY

NUMERICAL LITERACY
This is how the lesson of "Mathematics" of the Second Chance Schools (SDE) is called. Its target is to initiate students in the world of "numbers and shapes"; an abstruse world, yet alluring.

Educators: Georgios Domouchtsis - Mavroudis Moraitis

INFORMATICS LITERACY
In our times and in a world that is characterized by a rapid technological development in which computers play a dominant role, everyone must be "literate" in order to exploit the possibilities they offer us. Moreover, in most of our everyday tasks and activities, the use of computers has become essential.

Thereby, in the informatics laboratory we try to initiate the students and familiarize them with the world of computers. We are involved with applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, internet, sometimes all combined together, as well as combined with the other fields of literacy.

For example, the research of data through the internet, as well as the elaboration of projects for other fields is carried out in our laboratory. Additionally, there is an attempt to choose subjects that interest them or are useful for their job.

Educators: Ioannis Kioldelis - Christos Kallitsopoulos

SOCIAL LITERACY
Social literacy covers a very wide cognitive field and is a new cognitive subject. Its target is the students to acquire the skill to comprehend the various social phenomena or events, especially in our times, that modern society passes through rapid changes. The issues which social literacy deals with relate to the student's interests and needs, are related with up to date events and offers knowledge which will consist of the background on which the procedure for "lifelong learning" will be based on.

The objective of this lesson is initiating students in the social phenomena and their interactions, as well as the evolvement of society through history. The analysis of the above has interested man from antiquity; samples of such thinking are observed from Plato's and Aristotle's works till today.

Educators: Maria Pelteki - Irini Stylli

SCIENTIFIC LITERACY
Scientific literacy is described as the scientific thinking that man developed in order to understand and describe the complicated world that surrounded him. At an attempt to discover and describe the deeper functional structures of our world, he managed to create a communication code with nature. The dialogue with nature continues till today and has offered important theories to humanity that describe our world and are characterized by fantasy and ingenuity. Scientific triumphs and the scientific way of thought are considered to consist one of the most basic components of our civilization. At the same time, technology continuously modifies and modulates the environment which we are living in. Technology tries to serve the social needs of people, provides tools and techniques to natural sciences which are necessary for research and often suggests new research fields based on the comprehension of scientific principles.

This field includes the following: Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Technology, Biology, Geology.

Educator: Paraschos Papapanagiotou

ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY
This lesson aims to sensitize students - citizens in environmental protection, because serious ecological problems, such a nuclear energy, forest destruction, the ozone hole that is continuously becoming larger, the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because of human activities, new electronic technology, genetics engineering threaten environment. Thereby we have the obligation to keep a clean environment and hand it over as such to the future generations.

Educator: Aggelos Baltzis

LINGUISTIC LITERACY
The lesson of Linguistic Literacy at SDE takes into consideration the learning experiences and learning needs of the students on Modern Greek language and aims to the improvement of the quality of oral and written speech and the expansion of their knowledge on issues that are related with the content and the various types of speech.

"The items of Linguistic Literacy (reading, writing, glossary, grammar) are considered activities with social - cultural messages and consequently the teaching of language equals to the teaching of aspects, cultural attitudes and social rules".

Within the framework of the lesson of Linguistic Literacy, the students enrich their glossary, improve their skill to express themselves, comprehend and produce texts and simultaneously acquire skills and knowledge that relate to speech in all its expressions.

A special emphasis should be given to everyday communication occasions, utilitarian texts and speech of mass media. Importance should be also given to the cultivation and promotion of creative writing.

The learning process is carried out by interactive and experiential methods, mainly by projects and support of multimedia and what is mainly pursued is the students to learn without having the feeling that they obey to traditional teaching methods. "Language is a way to understand worlds, yet it is a whole world by itself" (Umberto Eco)

Educators: Argyro Kokkinaki - Panagiota Anastasilaki

ENGLISH LITERACY
The objective of English Literacy at Second Chance Schools of Serres is the students to come into contact with the English language, culture and civilization. Through authentic situations, active participation, experiential exercises and interesting materials, we attempt to create the proper conditions, so that the learning of foreign language to have sense, to connect with the student's everyday life and become a pleasant and productive procedure.

Within the framework of this philosophy, during the 2-year operation of the school, we have collaborated with other literacy fields in interdisciplinary lessons, such as, for example, numerical informatics (e-shopping), linguistic (human rights and Greek words in English), environmental (right of consumers (games and quizzes), etc.
